A cozy courtyard tucked behind Badiani's Islington gelateria has been transformed into a lush, plant-filled retreat that softens the industrial brick and steel of its existing pergola. The bold starting point was a hot-pink steel pergola and a hand-painted floral mural that already anchored the space. Instead of competing with these features, the design embraces them — the brick walls are painted crisp white to highlight the pink structure and mural, while a layered planting scheme adds vibrancy around them.

Evergreen elements include Pittosporum 'Golf Ball' and Osmanthus × burkwoodii, underplanted with rosemary, Sarcococca, and Geranium 'White-Ness' for scent and texture through the seasons. Trachelospermum jasminoides, trained up the pergola, will eventually soften the steelwork with starry white flowers, while Erigeron karvinskianus grows through the planting for a relaxed, self-seeding effect.

Furniture from Nardi in bright pera and menta complements the mural's palette, paired with oversized concrete and glazed yellow pots that give the space striking presence. A Fatboy RockCoco chandelier adds a touch of drama after dark.

Overall, the small urban courtyard feels welcoming, distinctive, and true to Badiani's character.
